How do IT security and participation go together? When we think of security as a concept that eventually always relates to humans, we need to get an understanding of the people (and contexts) for whom we are developing security. As the hardest part of developing a good solution can be to understand the problem, we need to get an idea who the users are, what they do, and what kinds of attitudes and properties they may have. For this, the use of participatory methods is essential – as it implies active involvement of the people designed for in the research.
In this three-day workshop with Lizzie Coles-Kemp (Royal Holloway University of London) and Laura Shipp, we will gain a better understanding of participatory IT security research and the methods associated with it. We will learn about methods of participation in case studies and hands-on exercises and eventually practice three types of methods together with a group of users on site. We will work together with international students in small groups, applying the participatory methods on co-constructed IT security problems.
